If you were in possession of microsoft Surface equipment or a machine running Windows and lost it, there is no need to panic. Indeed, these types of devices have a tool that will allow you to locate and block them remotely (this tool can be used in all circumstances, even if it had not been activated before the device was lost). However, it should be noted that a competent hacker can easily bypass this additional protection.
Logging in to your Microsoft accountThe first thing to do is to go to this page, in order to log in to the Microsoft account attached to the lost machine. Once logged in, you will see a list of all the devices attached to the account.
Just click on the name of your computer and view the details.
Enabling Location Tracking When they lose their computer, many people realize that they had not enabled location tracking. Luckily, there is a simple and effective trick that allows you to do this remotely, as long as the machine in question is connected to the Internet and has previously been linked to a Microsoft account. If these conditions are met, you will only have to click on "Locate my computer > Activate remote location of my computer".
Locating and Locking the LostComputer If you have followed the steps mentioned below, the location of your PC should normally be active (one way to check this is to refresh the page). The real-time location of your device will be displayed and you will only have to click on "Lock my remote computer" to lock it.
A message will appear on your screen telling you that all computer sessions will be closed. Click on "Confirm".
Personalization of the locking messageFor more convenience, it is advisable to personalize the message to be displayed when the computer is locked (you can for example indicate your personal details such as your first and last names, telephone numbers, e-mail address, ...). Thanks to this trick, the person who finds your device will be able to easily contact you and return it to you. After writing the message, don't forget to click on "Confirm".
Changing the password after locking the computerTo avoid unpleasant surprises, Microsoft engineers recommend changing the password after locking the computer remotely (this tip is also ideal to reduce the risk of hacking).
After locking your computer and changing the password remotely, only those with administrative rights will be able to unlock it and log in.
